How did you hear about HSMAI?
I was a member years ago in the Los Angeles Chapter & was active from 1985 to 1987.

Why did you join HSMAI?
I wanted to start networking again particularly with hotels. My company is in the position to help. Also, Fran Kiradjian suggested I join.

Job Duties:
I’m Director of Research & Strategic Planning & work with clients in the Travel, Tourism, & Hospitality industry. We’re in the business of creating market leaders. And help build brand identity & grow market share.

Other organizations I'm involved in:
TTMA, AIGA, ATME.

Hobbies and/or Special Interests:
I paint in oils & have a collection of ethnic drums from around the world. When I am not relaxing and painting, I hike and mountain bike around the hills in Agoura.

It has also been my privilege to have taught visual communications courses at Moorpark College, and also for the Los Angeles County Board of Education’s Regional Occupation Program.

Tell us about your family:
My oldest daughter gave birth my first grandchild on September 7th, a girl, Mia… and she is beautiful.

My youngest daughter caters to events at the Skirball Museum, and is considering a career in hospitality. My son recently got his name in the credits for his lighting work on an independent short film. In addition to their many accomplishments, they have good hearts and are my greatest blessing.

Awards:
Well, in 1987 I received the So. Cal. HSMAI Member of the Year award, and was honored by the Governor’s on Tourism in 1988.

Other Comments :
I believe in using the human touch to connect clients with their customers. Reaching folks emotionally is more efficient than focusing primarily on the facts of an offer. Connecting with people at a gut level produces market leadership.

Low-price Guarantees: How Hotel Companies Can Get It Right | by Steven A. Carvell, Ph.D., and Daniel C. Quan, Ph.D.
With the growth of the internet, the increase in the volume of online bookings has altered and multiplied the hotel industry's distribution channels. While this growth has driven up the profits of online travel agencies, hotel operators are experiencing a loss of control over the pricing of rooms and a potential transfer of pricing authority to third-party internet-based companies. The popularity of such services stems from consumers' desire to obtain the lowest rate within their desired market segment. One possible cure applied by many hotel chains is to offer a best-rate guarantee on their own web sites.

When Times Get Tough…Get Tougher! Sell Harder Before You Cave-in on Rates | By Neil Salerno
When times get tough, natural human tendency tempts hoteliers to reduce rates in order to drive more business. At least that’s the general idea. Over and over again, this can of worms rears its ugly head every time there is a dip in occupancy. Caution…use some serious thought and harder selling before you cave-in on rates. If you don’t you may be setting yourself up for longer term disappointment.

Marketing Tips
Role Play to Increase Your Confidence
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

Being confident is probably the most important quality a business person can have. The more confident you are, the more sales you will close. Role-playing is an easy and effective way to help salespeople build their confidence. It gives salespeople the opportunity to learn new information, test their selling skills, and try different approaches.

Try splitting your role-playing session into two parts. After the first session, have a brief discussion of what the observers saw. Then do the same role-play again, then discuss. Usually your second attempt will be much better.

Use a camcorder to record each role-play to dramatically increase the effectiveness of your sessions. Often it is easier to see both the mistakes that were made and what was done well when you are watching it yourself. Later, you will have a library of sessions you can go back on and see your improvement.

Selling can be a difficult process. Customers judge you and compare you to the competition. Many companies use sales training to improve their odds, but no training program would be complete without practice sessions.

Email Tip of the Month
Can Spam Effectively with the Outlook Junk Mail Filter
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

For a more useful and less frustrating email experience, Outlook comes with a pretty — dare I say surprisingly? — effective spam filter.
The Outlook junk mail filter is even turned on by default. It is not operating at its highest efficiency, though, by default. Here's how to correct this and get the most out of Outlook's anti-spam arsenal.
To can spam effectively with the Outlook junk mail filter:

• Select Tools | Options... from the menu.
• Go to the Preferences tab.
• Click the Junk E-mail... button.
• Make sure High is selected under Choose the level of junk e-mail protection you want.
• Click OK.
• Click OK again.

When it determines an incoming message to be spam, Outlook automatically places it in the Junk E-mail folder — out of the way of your Inbox, but ready to be reviewed and recovered easily.
