REVENUE MANAGEMENT FOCUS 8 August 2006 | Hotel Sales Training that focuses on the sales process alone misses the point. There is no shortage of hotel sales people that know the process. The pace of business is so fast that a salesperson that continues to go through the 'steps' often fails to hear buying signals. Has anyone noticed in those Smith Travel reports that the demand side of the REVPAR equation is little bit delicate? 3 August 2006 | I received such an overwhelming response from my last article on revenue management; I thought this might be a good opportunity to amplify my thoughts a bit. I was pleased to also hear from hoteliers in several foreign countries who share a strong interest in revenue management procedures. I truly believe that revenue or yield management can benefit hotels of any size, anywhere, for it is as much a state-of-mind as it is a technique. 20 July 2006 | Chris Silcock, vice president, Revenue & Service Delivery, Hilton International, says, “The move to dynamic pricing enhances this capability but has to be driven in combination with the market rather than in spite of it. But nobody at the meeting used the word "beauty." Instead, today's spas are integrating cosmetic treatments like facials and manicures into holistic approaches to well-being. You can still get that pedicure, but your spa visit will also include fitness, health, relaxation and even spirituality. 9 August 2006 | When you were a kid, there were few things more exhilarating on a sultry summer night than sleeping in a tree house or tent, lighting sparklers, and counting fireflies. Now? Forget it—you'd need a lot more yoga to climb the swinging rope and fewer Frappuccinos to squeeze into that one-man cocoon. But at a new breed of top wilderness camps around the world, roughing it is pretty darn relative. 4 August 2006 | It is a well established fact that spa revenue in the U.S. is generated largely by women. According to the International Spa Association (“ISPA”), women account for over 75% of all spa visits. It is also a well established fact that spa utilization by males is increasing, driven by a combination of demographic and psychographic factors. One pound of strategy, six ounces of targeted media, two cups of breakthrough creative, three tablespoons of sheer luck and a pinch of Executive gut feel. Sound familiar? What may have worked in the past, simply doesn’t cut it anymore. It’s time for a new recipe. Marketing is maturing into a results-driven discipline. 31 July 2006 | Small business owners know how important it is to be familiar with customer needs and preferences. But having a general idea of what customers want from your business is not enough to create truly effective advertising and marketing campaigns. The City of Knowledge, where the hotel and school will be located, is an international complex for education, research, and innovation. There, students can find opportunities to help transform innovative ideas into tangible realities. COLUMNS 14 August 2006 | Scene One: You walk by the hotel reception area, you hear the phone ringing and ringing, five, six, seven times and you observe Robert at the front desk obviously checking in a guest and ignoring the phone. You run to the back office, handle the call and say nothing to Robert. What have you just told Robert? 10 August 2006 | One thing you can say about hotels, they don’t tend to move around very much, even if they have serious foundation problems. Airplanes, on the other hand, tend to be moving all the time because they cost a gajillion dollars and make no money unless they’re going somewhere. I like hotels a lot better, because they rarely crash into mountainsides. 4 August 2006 | Some folks assume that ‘CAN-SPAM' means "we-can-spam," but the acronym for CAN-SPAM derives from the bill's full name: Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003. Sure, we would all like to run full page ads every time we place an ad in a publication. However, if you have to go with something smaller, make it work to its maximum potential. Most full sized newspapers are twenty-two inches high. If you run an ad that is twelve inches high, or higher, then you can be sure your ad will be above the fold. The size of your ad will always matter. The bigger the ad, the better to be seen with, my dear. However, unique borders, graphics and eye-catching design can serve to grab a reader's attention. Whether big or small, just make sure that something about the ad entices readers to look closer.
