How did you hear about HSMAI?
I went to Affordable Meetings West in Long Beach last year and did research for Elite Meetings International. It was a great source for the launch as we cater to both sides, Hotels and Planners.

Why did you join HSMAI?
Jay Klanfer recommended that I join HSMAI and that confirmed my feeling that I should join. I just got back from Affordable Meetings West in San Jose, and it was unreal, so much better than I expected.

Job duties:
Wow, we have a huge picture. Matching planners with upscale resorts through Elite Meetings Magazine, EliteMeetings.net and our event, Elite Meetings Alliance.

Elite Meetings came about because I was always getting asked what was the best hotel in this city or that for a particular type of meeting. I saw the need for a source to fill the gap and Elite Meetings fills that gap.

Our Board of Directors include high end hotels and industry veterans from both the supply and buyers’ side.

Other organization I'm involved in:
Professionally, MPI and International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), a European based organization.

Personally, I’m on the Board of Advisors for The First Tee. We mentor kids of all backgrounds through golf.

Right now that’s all I have time for!

Tell us about your immediate family:
Three boys – Seven, seven and six.

Awards:
We’re so new, none yet. But, stay tuned!!!

Other comments:
Elite Meetings International is building a solution. We want to save people time and be a efficient and effective source to do that.
We fully expect to be a household name within a year.

The Internet has become the main distribution channel in hospitality—over 2/3 of all hotel bookings in the US will be directly influenced by the Internet this year. Understandably, Internet marketing has become a priority for many hoteliers who are shifting advertising dollars to the online world from traditional media and GDS advertising. This rush forward may have come at a cost to hoteliers who rely on professional marketers to sort out this dynamic and highly complicated landscape of Internet marketing. This article is not about avoiding snake oil salesmen and Internet hucksters – those should be self evident – it’s about asking the tough questions when evaluating Internet marketers who will be in charge of managing your most important revenue channel.

Bad Debt and the Use of Credit Cards in U.S. Hotels - Provision for Doubtful Accounts Falls as Credit Card Commission Expense Rises | By Robert Mandelbaum and Alvin Minsk
20 July 2007 | Like other industries, lodging operations often extend credit to customers in order to gain their business. For hotels, permission to pay after services have been provided is most often granted to large groups and preferred corporate accounts. For transient guests and non-preferred groups and companies, credit must be established up front either by paying a cash deposit or using a credit card.

SMERF | A Multi-Billion Dollar Market Worth Pursuing
For some people the odd-sounding word “SMERF” conjures up images of blue-skinned gnomelike cartoon characters, but hotel marketers know that the word is really an acronym for a desirable yet hard to measure market. SMERF encompasses the social, military, education, religious, and fraternal group travel market, and because many of these organizations are run by volunteers, it can be daunting to find and market to those decision makers.

Marketing Tip

How to Headline Your Business for Success
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

Believe it or not, a bad title or headline will turn your prospects away quicker than just about anything else. When you're trying to promote, you need people to stick around long enough to hear your sales pitch, and a bad article title or sales letter headline will turn people off before they even realize it.

Your title or headline is your very first opportunity to make an impression on your prospects. If that impression is a positive, informative, creative, or exciting one, you're off to a very good start. Similarly, if that first impression is boring, worn-out, or confusing, your prospects probably won't even get beyond the first line.

When writing titles or headlines, think about your audience. No matter who they are, titles should flow from the lips easily, and give readers some idea of what they'll learn by reading on. At the same time, they should be short enough to be memorable.

Beyond being clear and informative in your title, there are a few enhancements you can use. Remember when you learned about rhyme in elementary school? Well, rhyme is very good creative tool for writing zippy headlines and titles. A rhyming title is catchy and fun, almost compelling your audience to keep reading.

Alliteration is another great way to dress up a plain-jane title.
Alliteration is the repetition of a particular consonant sound at the beginning, end, or middle of two or more words (i.e. terrific titles). An alliterative title is easy to say, easy to remember, and just plain fun to read.

A good title or headline gives your audience the idea that your article, sales letter, or other copy is going to be a fun, entertaining, or informative read, which is an absolute necessity if you want your first impression to lead to a second chance.

Email Tip

How to Make Links Work in Outlook Express, Outlook and Any Other Email Program
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

When you see the hand cursor, you know what to do: click.

However, nothing happens. You click again and again — more feverishly, then furiously each time — on the obvious link in the email you received. Outlook makes no move. Your browser does not come up. You are taken nowhere.

Unfortunately, this can happen to you no matter what email program you use: Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Eudora,... all can be affected. It is usually not the email client's fault but a matter of the association that links hyperlinks to your browser broken or distorted in some way.

Fortunately, you can usually restore this association. For a quick fix, try changing your default browser and then restore your old favorite.

Sometimes this is all that is needed.

More thorough and, thus, more fun is the following approach, though.

Make Links Work in Outlook Express, Outlook and Any Other Email Program

To make web pages open again when you click links in emails:

  • Make sure neither Outlook Express nor Internet Explorer are open.
  • Select Control Panel from the Start menu.
  • Click Internet Options.
    • If you do not see Internet Options right away, click Network and Internet Connections before.
  • Go to the Programs tab.
  • Make sure Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser is checked.
