How did you hear about HSMAI?
When I was with the Holiday Inn Costa Mesa as a Senior Sales Manager, my Director of Sales was an HSMAI member and I saw the benefit it brought to the hotel. I was very active with the Costa Mesa and Anaheim/Orange County CVBs and they once told me that HSMAI is a good organization to belong to.

Why did you join HSMAI?
Because our hotel, the Embassy Suites – LAX South has 10,000 square feet of meeting / banquet space, which I’m very proud of and I know that HSMAI - Affordable Meetings would be a good trade show to attend to showcase our property.

Job Duties:
A lot! I manage the Sales Department, introduce / represent the hotel to various markets in outside functions, make sure our Sales Revenue goals are met, prepare Sales Reports, Expenses and Budgets, establish good rapport with client-businesses, social organizations and our competition, among other responsibilities. Bottom line is I make sure the hotel makes money by bringing in the right business at the right rate.

Other organizations I'm involved in:
I was in the Aerospace Industry for 19 years before working in Hospitality, so I still am considered a member of the Amelia Earhart Society. I’m a member of NTA, ASAE, SGMP, RCMA and involved in the El Segundo and Los Angeles Chambers of Commerce events.

Hobbies and/or Special Interests:
Traveling with my husband and children. I collect Chinese pottery, brass antiques and bells.

Tell us a little about your immediate family:
Married to a wonderful man for 24 years. Have two children: One just graduated from High School and one from college, both with honors. I’ve lived in Orange County for 26 years.

Other Comments :
I am very proud of the Embassy Suites LAX South. The service is excellent, everyone in the hotel is involved in giving the guests a feeling of importance. The hotel is very clean and well-maintained. A group of guests from Australia once told me that our Mediterranean-style hotel gave them a feeling that this hotel is the next best thing to paradise!

Niche Tourism: Contemporary Issues, Trends and Cases
By Marina Novelli

"Niche Tourism: contemporary issues, trends and cases examines one of the fastest growing areas within the tourism sector. The concept of 'niche tourism' has emerged in recent years in counter-point to what is commonly referred to as 'mass tourism'. It implies a more sophisticated set of practices that distinguish and differentiate tourists. In a globalising world of increasing 'sameness', niche tourism represents diversity and ways of marking difference." This book provides an integrated picture of specialty/niche tourism as a whole, looking at both the 'macro' and 'micro' niche area. It has a comprehensive theoretical framework, and discusses initiatives, policies and strategies adopted internationally. International case studies emphasize the links of theory to practice.

Marketing Tips
Conquer Customer Doubt
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

The biggest hurdle advertising has to jump is doubt. Most people take ads with a grain of salt. They generally don't believe everything you say and sometimes don't accept anything your ad claims.

Fortunately there are several ways to conquer customer doubt.

Include testimonials from satisfied customers. Use comments that reflect the main benefits you give to customers. Yesterday we got a note from a client thanking us for "completing my sales letter so fast and writing so convincingly." That's just the kind of thing our customers want and you can bet his words will go on our site soon.

Get endorsements from other well known people in your industry. Customers will think if SHE thinks this is a good deal, it must be. You see the endorsement technique used well on a lot of sites selling ebooks and courses. Experts often give you an endorsement just for promoting their name in your materials.

Finally, provide proof that your product or service works as promised. Show the exact results several clients got. Some sites even display their bank statement or large checks they have received.

Email Tip of the Month
Back Up Your Outlook Express Mail Files Automatically
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

If you want to copy your Outlook Express folders and emails from one computer to another, doing it by hand works fine. You can even manage casual backups this way.

The right thing to do are regular, scheduled backups, however. Not only will you possibly forget about them sooner or later (at least I do), the manual process is far too cumbersome for something that should happen every day.

Fortunately, the Outlook Express mail files backup process can be automated with the help of a short batch file and the Windows task scheduler.

To back up your Outlook Express mail files automatically:

  • Download oebackup.bat.
    • Click on the link with the right mouse button.
    • Select Save Target As... or Save Link Target As... from the menu.
  • Open the downloaded file in Notepad.
  • Customize it for your needs.
  • You can move oebackup.bat to any folder, but I recommend either your My Documents folder or a subfolder.
  • Open Scheduled Tasks in your Windows Settings.
  • Double-click Add Scheduled Task.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Browse....
  • Find and select oebackup.bat.
  • Click Open.
  • Select a scheduling option under Perform This Task.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.

The oebackup.bat script copies only files that have changed since the last backup. If you use the %date% directory trick, you may have to combine files from several directories to get a complete copy of your Outlook Express store folder.

Apart from this, restoring from this automated backup works just like recovering from a manual backup.
