Libby Zarrahy CMP, Director of Sales & Marketing
Marriott Los Angeles Downtown
Certified Meeting Professional
Phone: 213.617.6036

How did you hear about HSMAI?
My staff – their comments on the wonderful education programs. Monthly meetings with featured topical information. I am not active on the education committee seeking new topical venues to introduce and share with our counterparts. I am always on the hunt!

Why did you join HSMAI?
Educational and networking. Even the newest or most tenured hotel professional can always add to their skill sets and knowledge especially in this fast paced profession. HSMAI networking is exceptional. Every meeting I have attended I have met a minimum of 5 new contracts, that’s five new extensions to my sales efforts – how beautiful is that? I am currently working to earn my certification as a CHME.

Job duties:
Simplifying my teams tasks on a day to day basis. Simplifying a meeting planner’s day. If I can reduce their concerns and anxiety in contracting venues and make it fun on top of it all the likelihood of doing it again increases, and with that comes repeat business – it is important that people enjoy what they are engaged in doing – life is too short otherwise. No day is the same, variety of job duties and people we interact with keep it fresh and enjoyable.

Other organization I'm involved in:
Meetings Planners International,
Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce,
Downtown Business Improvement District (DBID),
CMP Facilitator for Southern California,
LA INC Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau

Hobbies and/or Special Interests
Real Hope for Haiti – a portion of my family are missionaries in Haiti. There are so many people in the world that can benefit from our knowledge and help. How can we not reach out and help those in need?
USC Football – does it get any better than this?

Tell us about your immediate family:
My husband, Joe Zarrahy, General Manager, Crowne Plaza at Commerce Casino – I don’t know if it’s easier being married to a GM or working for a GM – the jury is still out. Son, Brandon, two cocker spaniels Max and Lucy.

Awards:
2008 - Coach of the Year Interstate Hotels and Resorts RFL Western Region

FEATURED ARTICLE
The Bad News & Good News About Hospitality Today | By Marvin Cetron, Ph.D.
It may seem that all the news out there about the hospitality industry is bad. Not so. A special bonus HSMAI Marketing Review article: "The Bad News & Good News About Hospitality Today," gives a fresh outlook on where we're headed. Unlike some commentators, we at Forecasting International have never been convinced that a worldwide depression was at hand. The current downturn has been hard, especially for hospitality, but it will not last. The American economy, on which so much of the hospitality industry depends, will begin to grow again before the end of 2009. Five years later, the turmoil that began in 2008 will be remembered as a necessary purge that readied the world for another round of solid expansion.

No Vacation from the Economy: Two Thirds of Americans Plan Summer Vacation, but Nearly Half will Spend Less Than Last Year
19 May 2009 | As school ends and the weather turns warmer, people normally start to think about summer vacations. The faltering economy does have many Americans, as well as their employers, rethinking and re-budgeting – but not necessarily eradicating – their summer travel plans. Concerns about the economy are prompting two in five Americans (40%) to be less likely to travel for both business and leisure during the summer travel season from May – August.

MGM Mirage bets it's time to raise Vegas room rates | latimes.com
12 May 2009 | Deflation, we're told, is a bad thing. Unless it's deflation of ridiculously high prices -- say, for Las Vegas hotel rooms. FEATURED REPORT
Manhattan’s Luxury and First-Class Hotel Market: A Ten-Year Review
By Jonathan B. Sebbane, Vice President, Roland de Milleret, Senior Vice President and Nicolas S. Graf, Ph.D., University of Houston. For most U.S. hotel markets, 2008 represented the first year of the recession; however, the Manhattan lodging market was able to weather the economic recession during the first nine months of the year, closing 2008 with moderate growth and remaining the top-performing market in the U.S. Despite its volatile nature, the Manhattan hotel market experienced growth in demand stronger than the increase in supply during the ten years from year-end 1998 to year-end 2008, allowing the market to aggressively push average rate and occupancy to levels well above those of the other Top U.S urban hotel markets and offering less downside risk and more upside potential.

Write Your Own Press Release in Five Steps
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

Media editors everywhere are under intense pressure to come up with good information fast. When you give an editor interesting, useful information, you have a good chance of getting free media coverage in return.

Try writing your own press release to send to your local and regional media. Here are five easy steps to get you started.

  1. Put your contact information at the top. Editors often need to contact you for more information and most need a clear idea of who you are.
  2. Next write a headline that gives the editor a good idea of what your release is about. I often follow that with a second smaller headline that previews a few main points of my information.
  3. Below that, write a lead paragraph of two to three sentences. It should read like the opening paragraph of a newspaper story. Provide the who, what, where, why, when, and how of your information. Even if the editor reads no further, she should now know who you are and what you did (or are going to do).
  4. Next comes the body of the releases where you lay out your information in short, simple sentences.
  5. Toward the end of your release you can make it a bit more like an ad. Tell how to purchase your product or service.

How to Delete an Address from the Outlook Auto-Complete List
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

Outlook remembers every address you have typed in a To:, Cc: or Bcc: field. This is good: when you start keying in a name or address, Outlook automatically suggest the contact in its entirety.
Unfortunately, Outlook remembers the mistyped and old as well as the correct and current — and suggest it indiscriminately. Fortunately, getting rid of entries you no longer want to appear in the auto-complete list is easy.

Delete an Address from the Outlook Auto-Complete List

To remove a name or email address from Outlook's auto-complete list:

  • Create a new email message in Outlook.
  • Start typing the name or address you want to remove.
  • Use the down arrow key to highlight the desired (undesired) entry.
  • Press Del.

Want to Edit the Outlook Auto-Complete List?

For more control over Outlook's email address auto-complete file, try a tool like Ingressor.

Prevent Outlook Address Auto-Completion Altogether

You can also stop Outlook from suggesting email addresses as you type:

  • Select Tools | Options... from the menu.
  • Go to the Preferences tab.
  • Click E-mail Options....
  • Now click Advanced E-mail Options....
  • Make sure Suggest names while completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields is not checked.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.
  • Click OK once more.
