World Economic Forum Launches First-Ever Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report
“Our study is not a ‘beauty contest’, or a statement about the attractiveness of a country. On the contrary, we aim to measure the factors that make it attractive to develop the travel and tourism industry of individual countries. The top rankings of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore demonstrate the importance of supportive business and regulatory frameworks, coupled with world-class transport and tourism infrastructure and a focus on nurturing human and natural resources, for fostering an environment that is attractive for developing the travel & tourism (T&T) sector,” said Jennifer Blanke, Senior Economist of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Network.

ECONOMIC INSIGHTS
New Orleans | By Daniel Voellm | HVS international
6 March 2007 | The year 2007 will be a difficult one for New Orleans and its hotels. Last year was not altogether a bad one, as the first half of 2006 was bolstered by demand from FEMA for temporary housing at full rate, as well as post-hurricane workers and insurance adjustors. Thus, 2006 sets the bar too high for 2007 expectations.

After Blackstone's $39 billion purchase of Equity Office Properties deal was topped in deal size by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts’ bid for Texas Pacific Group (TXU) for about $45 billion, it almost seems like everyone yawns at “mere” billion dollar deals, much less something smaller.

Marketing Tip

How to Battle Copycats
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

What do you do when a competitor steals your successful strategy and starts using it against you?

For example, you offer a popular product at the lowest price in radio commercials. Your competitor hears you are racking up the sales and airs his own radio ads.  His price is even lower than yours.

If you're the bigger of the two firms, ignore you competitor. You probably won't be too off base in figuring many customers who notice the copycat will realize they're stealing your ideas.

You can also shift your marketing slightly. Instead of touting your low price, talk about your speed, service, friendly employees, and convenient location.

You can also take on your competitor publicly. Point out what they are doing and give a blow-by-blow explanation of how you are beating them. This works especially well if you are the underdog trying to get attention. A row in the media can stir up attention and improve sales for everyone.

Email Tip

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 - Email Program
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

The Bottom Line

Microsoft Office Outlook shines as an email client with great talent for organizing (virtual folders, fast search), solid spam and phishing filters, and seamless integration with to-do lists and scheduling. Outlook's message templates could be more flexible, though, and its smart folders could learn from example.

Pros

  • Outlook comes with solid and effective spam filtering and blocks phishing attempts
  • Snappy, flexible search, virtual folders and mail grouping help you organize mail
  • Outlook integrates email messages, to-do lists and scheduling well

Cons

  • Outlook is a bit confusing to set up and can be confusing to use with its myriad of options, too
  • You cannot create smart folders or flags that learn by example
  • Outlook lacks useful message templates, and its RSS feed reader flexibility

Description

  • Microsoft Office Outlook manages multiple POP, IMAP, Exchange, MSN and Hotmail accounts.
  • Outlook offers powerful filters and ways to organize, label and find messages.
  • Effective junk mail and phishing filters move unsolicited messages to a "Junk E-mail" folder automatically.
