How did you hear about HSMAI?
I'd been aware of HSMAI for a few years, but had never participated.

In 1997, I was working for a hotel management company who were big on education and career development as well as big supporters of HSMAI. They wanted all their Sales & Marketing Staff to be members and as many to earn their CHME designation as possible. They went so far as to hire a proctor to administer the CHME exam at a quarterly Sales Retreat, which is when took the test and joined.

Why did you join HSMAI?
At first for the educational opportunities and great marketing resources such as the Market Review.

The fabulous networking was a bonus. At my second HSMAI Luncheon I met a Sales Manager from a nearby hotel. When I returned to office, I had a voice mail with a lead for a group she couldn't accommodate. This group booked with me and turned into a repeat client. After that I was sold and have lost count of all the great contacts I've made through HSMAI, not just locally, but nationwide.

Other organization I'm involved in:
Since moving to Oregon, buying a house, etc. I've not had a lot of time. But made time to get involved with Friends of the Library, a local group which helps support the Library and its programs. Funny, many of the concepts I've learned from HSMAI programs regarding Sales, Marketing, Advertising and PR have come in handy in helping promote books sales and other community out reach activities.

Hobbies and/or Special Interests
For the last few years it seems most of my free time has been taken up with, selling and buying houses and moving! However, when I have free time I enjoy traveling, films and reading. Food is another favorite. I especially, enjoy cooking with fresh, natural and local ingredients and use organic whenever possible. In baking, I like using whole grain, non-wheat flours and sweeteners other than sugar. Recently I baked a cake with rye flour and often bake banana, zucchini and pumpkin breads with spelt flour and maple syrup or agave nectar. Don't get me wrong, I love sugar and I never passed up any of the wonderful desserts at the HSMAI luncheons.

Both my husband and I like to entertain and are looking forward, now that we're somewhat settled, to having our new friends over.

Tell us about your immediate family:
My husband, Dave, and I just celebrated our 10th anniversary. Our dog, Captain, is definitely part of the family.

Awards:
I've not received any lately, however I was very proud when HSMAI Greater Los Angeles Chapter received the Communications Award in the "Best of the Best" competition at the HSMAI Leadership Conference last year in Colorado Springs.

Other comments:
HSMAI is a wonderful organization. The educational programs, resources, benefits and connections that Membership provide are priceless. I would encourage everyone who is not a member to join, and those who are to get more involved. Membership in HSMAI is like joining a gym - the more you participate the more benefits you'll see. In these tough times HSMAI will give you and your organization the edge you need to prosper and stay ahead of the competition.

Another unexpected aspect of my HSMAI involvement was the wide spectrum of the Hospitality Industry the membership and luncheon attendees I've met. Sometimes, I may not need a member's services, but have been able to put a client or colleague in touch with someone who is a good fit for them. I find that very rewarding.

The slowdown is expected to continue through 2009 and perhaps into 2010. Operating performance drifted down from the 2007 highs throughout the first half of 2008. The decline accelerated in early summer when the impact of the economic and banking crisis became fully apparent. The failure of a number of financial institutions in mid-September and accelerating downward trends in the stock markets and bourses compounded the situation further.

Marketing Tip

What Your Website Color Scheme Says to Visitors
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

We are constantly surrounded by color. Because our world is so saturated with thousands of hues, we don't consciously notice the effects different colors have on us. But even if we don't notice it, color changes our mood, our appetite, our sleep patterns, even our metabolism.

That is why it is so important to carefully plan the color scheme of your website. Not only does color influence the way people feel when they visit your website, but it also determines whether your site will be seen as professional or amateur, appropriate or off-key.

There is an almost endless supply of color choices for the web, but don't get carried away. Just because you like 20 different colors doesn't mean they should all be incorporated into your site. Choose only a few--three is probably enough--and go from there.

Also, remember to pick hues that complement each other. Use a background that contrasts with the color of your text. The common choice is black text on a white background. If you have a lot of text for visitors to read, this will be the easiest on their eyes. Never pair a light background and a light text--unless you want your visitors to go blind, that is.

Consider the subtle, emotional effects your color scheme will have on visitors. Red stimulates metabolism and makes people hungry. Blues and greens promote serenity, calm, peace, and order. Yellow is cheerful and usually improves a person's mood.

Ask yourself who your audience is. If you are designing the site for children, reds and yellows are good choices. Many shades of blue exude professionalism, wealth and power, but not all. If you want to create corporate style identity, steer clear of sentimental blues, like cornflower blue. If you are going for a look that appeals to a nature and outdoors group, go for earth tones like brown and green.

by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

Plus, more, extra, addition, bonus, ultra: Windows Live Hotmail Plus gives you more — more access to your email, for example.

With a Plus subscription, you can download incoming Windows Live Hotmail messages to any desktop email program — or another web-based email service perhaps if it supports fetching mail — using the tried and true post office protocol (POP). Of course, you can send mail using your Windows Live Hotmail address from that email program, too.

Access Windows Live Hotmail Plus via POP in Any Email Program

To set up a Windows Live Hotmail Plus account using POP, pick your email program from the list or see below for general settings.

To access a Windows Live Hotmail Plus account in any desktop email program:

  • POP (incoming) server: pop3.live.com
  • POP port: 995
  • POP SSL required: yes
  • POP user name: your complete Windows Live Hotmail address (including "@hotmail.com", "@live.com", etc.)
  • POP password: your Windows Live Hotmail password
