FEATURED ARTICLE Hotel
Marketing | An Investment In People | By Robert Mandelbaum And Steven
Nicholas CHAGiven all the discussions of distribution channels, yield management, Internet booking sites, and alternative forms of media, it is tough to deny that advances in technology have heavily influenced hotel marketing. However, when analyzing the thousands of financial statements in PKF Consulting’s Trends in the Hotel Industry database, the majority of marketing dollars spent at the property level currently pay for labor related costs. In 2005, the salaries, wages, and benefits paid to sales department personnel accounted for 55.6 percent of total marketing department expenditures . For reference purposes, this ratio was 28.4 percent in 1980. ECONOMIC INSIGHTS 29 November 2006 | At the recent ISHC Annual Conference held in Miami, Florida, ISHC members participated in a series of roundtable discussions to identify the ISHC Top Ten Issues in the Hospitality Industry for 2007. This year the debate included in-depth discussions on over 100 different issues with 27 making the ballot for the final vote by the members. 19 December 2006 | As reflected in the data compiled by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the first eight months of 2006 in the World Tourism Barometer published in early November, the growth in tourism demand "continues to exceed expectations, showing resilience against external factors that defies all traditional logic". 14 December 2006 | Smith Travel Research (STR) is the recognized leader in providing accurate, actionable information and analysis to the lodging industry. The study reveals almost half of all affluent U.S. 30 November 2006 | New York, PricewaterhouseCoopers forecasts that room night demand for the upcoming holiday period will increase by 2.6 percent over the prior year to a new record level of 2.39 million average occupied rooms per night between November 23, 2006 and January 1, 2007. FEATURED REPORT Voice of the

Furthermore, 4 in 10 of website visitors are first timers, and only 22.1% mid-scale business travelers abandon their plan to make an online transaction versus 31% for leisure travelers.

FEATURED DOWNLOAD How to maintain
success in the online travel spaceDespite the impact of recent shocks, Europe’s travel sector is continuing to expand and experiencing steadily growing consumer demand, albeit at a relatively modest annual rate of around 2 per cent to 3 per cent. However, a major shift is now under way in how consumers book their travel. As a result, much of the growth in Europe’s travel market is concentrated in the online arena, where the accessibility of the internet – combined with increasing consumer confidence in the online channel – has driven activity and revenues upwards.
TRAVEL INTERNET MARKETING FOCUS 13 December 2006 | MCLEAN, VA -- Engaging audiences, benchmarking metrics and what it takes to create successful online experiences were recurring themes at HSMAI’s 7th Travel Internet Marketing Strategy Conference held in Sunny Isles, FL, last week. Over 130 representatives from a cross-section of the travel industry attended the intensive full-day session. 15 December 2006 | The penetration of broadband has largely been attributed as the major driver of online travel growth (i.e., as consumers came online, they bought). However, as this demand and behavioral shift have occurred, consumers have fired up their lightning-fast connections only to be generally disappointed (ergo the general slowing of online travel growth). 13 December 2006 | With so many hotels relying on the Internet to help fill their rooms, it amazes me that there are still so many hotel web sites that are not designed to produce room reservations. After-all isn’t that the primary reason why hotel sites are published to the Internet to begin with? It’s also shocking that so many web site designers don’t have a clue about search engines, how they work, nor how and why people select a hotel in which to stay. 12 December 2006 | Consumer generated media (CGM) — blogs, discussion boards, review sites, social network sites, etc., has remained a prevalent subject in hotel marketing discussions in the past year. How can hotel and travel marketers use this new medium to their advantage? Should CGM be considered an opportunity to promote the hotel product and be part of the marketing strategy, or is it a threat that needs to be contained? 6 December 2006 | One of the key tenets of Travel 2.0 is that (finally) the true power of the Web is being harnessed to support the systematic automation and online sharing of classic travel behaviors. There certainly is nothing fundamentally "new" about sharing pictures, clipping out articles and notes and putting them in a folder, or asking your friends for their ideas on where to go on vacation; indeed these are as old as time. REVENUE MANAGEMENT FOCUS 14 December 2006 | SOUTHLAKE, Texas | SynXis, the Sabre Holdings business that provides reservation management, distribution and technology services for hotels around the world, announced today that in 2006 it has processed the highest number of transactions in its history and has generated more than $2 billion in revenue for SynXis hotel customers. 19 December 2006 | Scottsdale, Ariz. | JDA® Software Group, Inc. today announced it added three industry professionals to its growing Services Industries (Travel, Tourism, Hospitality) Division. RESORT MARKETING FOCUS 18 December 2006 | MCLEAN, VA | The annual event that draws the resort industry at-large for two days of insightful education, debates and lively discussions will convene for the seventh year when the Annual Resort Management Conference takes place at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO from March 25-27, 2007. 20 December 2006 | MIAMI, FL | Online marketing emerged as the central concern and focus of most of the 176 attendees at the 2nd Annual Caribbean Sales & Marketing Strategy Conference held in Miami recently. 19 December 2006 | Orlando Florida | This year saw the world’s largest vacation ownership business rebrand its timeshare properties while new hospitality brands popped up overnight with compelling names like Aloft, Cambria, Indigo, ME, NYLO, Viceroy, Capella and “1”. 13 December 2006 | Hospitality Lawyer Baja Mexico. He's done it again if you believe the AP Wire reports. On Saturday, December 9, 2007, the Associated Press reported that, “Donald Trump’s new luxury hotel-condominiums on Mexico’s booming Baja California coast registered about $122 million in sales Friday, potentially heralding a resurgent development boom along the Pacific shoreline, just south of the U.S. border.” HOTEL DIRECTOR OF SALES & MARKETING 18 December 2006 | In an effort to increase the effectiveness of their hotel sales and reservations staff, general managers traditionally have looked to outside "mystery shopping" companies to place test calls and then complete checklists that "score" an agent on their sales/service skills. 20 December 2006 | Hotel Sales departments across the U.S. continue to allow dollars to be left on the table because incoming inquiring phone calls - - calls made by potential clients planning a group function of some type - - are either not being handled promptly or correctly or are being ignored altogether. Why? 18 December 2006 | Despite all the technology advances in front-office systems, at most hotels the check-in process itself has de-evolved into a scripted, robotic and heartless business transaction. SALES & MARKETING FACULTY 18 December 2006 | Washington | Anthony G. Marshall, J.D., CHA, CHE, former president of the Educational Institute (EI) of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), passed away at his home in Orlando, Fla., on December 6, 2006, after a long battle with brain cancer. 19 December 2006 | Washington | The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is mobilizing the industry to participate in National Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2, 2007, and introduce young people to the more than 200 lodging career paths. A nationwide initiative, this day allows more than one million school-aged kids across America to receive an up-close look at how the skills they learn in school are put into action in the workplace. 11 December 2006 | Deniz Ayaz, a senior hotel, restaurant, and institutional management (HRIM) major at the University of Delaware, won the best paper award for "A Comparative Analysis of Perceived Hotel Satisfaction Between All-Inclusive Hotel Guests and Non-Inclusive Hotel Guests" from the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education Hospitality Educators of the Mid-Atlantic region chapter during its undergraduate research conference Nov. 8 December 2006 | IRVINE, Calif. | UC Irvine Extension, the pioneer of the first “Spa and Hospitality Management” certificate program on the West Coast, has broken new ground, yet again, by offering its renowned program in a completely online platform. COLUMNS 13 December 2006 | If you have ever tried to read any of the books out there about project management, you probably felt like you were embarking on a 12-step program. Let me just say that project management is not as complicated or mysterious as it might seem. In fact, any time you set out with a plan to accomplish a task that has specific goals and requires the use of time or materials, you are performing project management. 12 December 2006 | Hello, out there. Anyone home, on deck, at the switch, in charge? Perhaps you are not a reader of the Boston Globe, but they in the past month have taken some sharp shots at our Industry, rousing the public, and basically taking our business into the Public Forum. The message from their editorial pages resonates with outrage and probably echoes, although not so stridently, what is happening throughout other major US cities. 6 December 2006 | In a September 2001 article we discussed the question: “What is a Boutique Hotel?” In that article we mentioned the number of rooms as one factor that has an impact on the correct usage of “boutique”; we even said that 100 rooms might be the upper limit. Things certainly have changed in five years. There seems to be no upper limit at this time. 5 December 2006 | Enthusiasm is sometimes defined as a whole-hearted devotion to an ideal, cause, study or pursuit. One might be said to be enthusiastic if they are excited about that in which they are engaged. Just about every new business starts off by sending a press release to media. That's a great idea. But don't stop there. It takes more PR on a consistent basis to bring in the BIG media coverage for your business, new product, service or idea. First, let's dispel a few common myths about press releases: Myth -- "Newspapers and other media WILL use my press release exactly the way I wrote it." Wrong. Because you aren't paying to have media print your release, they can use it or lose it as they see fit. Often, reporters will take your information and rewrite it or work it into another story. Myth -- "Your press release should be like a sales letter." Myth -- "Every word of my release has to be perfect, because editors will be reading it carefully." Absolutely not. Editors decide to read a release based on the headline. Then they quickly skim the top of the release to see if it's information they can use. Myth -- "If you don't get sales right away, your press release is a failure." It can take weeks or even months before media use your information. Look at a series of press releases as a way to build media awareness of you and your business. Let editors know you are a consistently good source of quality information about your industry. Reporters and writers will be more likely to contact you when they need your kind of information. The bottom line: Start sending out press releases now and keep it up every month. Response will start slowly, and then build. Free media publicity is far more powerful than paid advertising, but it takes time and work to achieve.
Outlook remembers every address you have typed in a To:, Cc: or Bcc: field. This is good: when you start keying in a name or address, Outlook will automatically suggest the contact in its entirety. Unfortunately, Outlook remembers the mistyped and old as well as the correct and current — and suggests it indiscriminately. Fortunately, getting rid of entries you no longer want to appear in the auto-complete list is easy.
