Business Transient Sales Manager - Millennium Biltmore Hotel

How did you hear about HSMAI?
A previous co-worker, Bob Chlebeda, told me how much he enjoyed the Orange County Chapter and encouraged me to join the Greater Los Angeles Chapter to broaden my horizons.

Why did you join HSMAI?
Being new to Los Angeles, I have a great deal to learn about the area. I wanted to meet new people, gain a stronger understanding of local market trends, and work toward a few certifications. I believe that HSMAI will help me achieve the success I am striving for in my current position with Millennium Hotels and Resorts.

Job duties:
I negotiate corporate rates and promote the hotel to individual business travelers both locally and nationally. The most important aspect of my job is understanding my travelers’ needs and communicating that information to the staff at the hotel so that we can provide the highest level of service possible.

Other organization I'm involved in:
LABTA, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.

Hobbies and/or Special Interests
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling, wine tasting, movies, and watching Penn State football. If I can find the time, I’d like to do some volunteer work in 2007.

Tell us about your immediate family:
I relocated here in June 2006 to be with my boyfriend, who moved here from the DC area a year before me. My mother is in Charlotte, NC and the rest of my family is in Northern Virginia. My beautiful nieces, Haley (11) and Leah (3), may be 2,600 miles away, but they are my sunshine.

Awards:
For the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, awards in recent years have included:
  * Smart Meetings Magazine Platinum Choice Award (2 years)
  * Meetings and Conventions Gold Key Award
  * Successful Meetings Pinnacle Award
  * Affluent Traveler Magazine Award of Distinction

Other Comments:
If you have not been to the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in awhile, I encourage you to stop by and take a look at its tremendous elegance. Our traditional afternoon high tea at the Rendezvous Court is a local favorite. I highly recommend our Japanese restaurant SaiSai and our California Mediterranean restaurant Smeraldi’s, both with new menus. Recent room upgrades have made the hotel even more stunning (there are more upgrades to come!), and the accommodating staff is truly outstanding. I am very lucky to have been so warmly welcomed to this magnificent city, not only by my coworkers but also by my colleagues in the travel industry.

FEATURED ARTICLE
Hotel Marketing | An Investment In People | By Robert Mandelbaum And Steven Nicholas CHA
Given all the discussions of distribution channels, yield management, Internet booking sites, and alternative forms of media, it is tough to deny that advances in technology have heavily influenced hotel marketing. However, when analyzing the thousands of financial statements in PKF Consulting’s Trends in the Hotel Industry database, the majority of marketing dollars spent at the property level currently pay for labor related costs. In 2005, the salaries, wages, and benefits paid to sales department personnel accounted for 55.6 percent of total marketing department expenditures . For reference purposes, this ratio was 28.4 percent in 1980.

How to maintain success in the online travel space
Despite the impact of recent shocks, Europe’s travel sector is continuing to expand and experiencing steadily growing consumer demand, albeit at a relatively modest annual rate of around 2 per cent to 3 per cent. However, a major shift is now under way in how consumers book their travel. As a result, much of the growth in Europe’s travel market is concentrated in the online arena, where the accessibility of the internet – combined with increasing consumer confidence in the online channel – has driven activity and revenues upwards.

Rich Internet Applications Deliver Fidelity at Your Fingers | By John Bray
15 December 2006 | The penetration of broadband has largely been attributed as the major driver of online travel growth (i.e., as consumers came online, they bought). Why the Design of Your Hotel Web Site Matters - By Neil Salerno
13 December 2006 | With so many hotels relying on the Internet to help fill their rooms, it amazes me that there are still so many hotel web sites that are not designed to produce room reservations. After-all isn’t that the primary reason why hotel sites are published to the Internet to begin with? It’s also shocking that so many web site designers don’t have a clue about search engines, how they work, nor how and why people select a hotel in which to stay.

Consumer Generated Media, a Threat or an Opportunity? | By Max Starkov and Jason Price
12 December 2006 | Consumer generated media (CGM) — blogs, discussion boards, review sites, social network sites, etc., has remained a prevalent subject in hotel marketing discussions in the past year. How can hotel and travel marketers use this new medium to their advantage? Should CGM be considered an opportunity to promote the hotel product and be part of the marketing strategy, or is it a threat that needs to be contained?

Calendar and Search Bring Place and Time Together | By John Bray
6 December 2006 | One of the key tenets of Travel 2.0 is that (finally) the true power of the Web is being harnessed to support the systematic automation and online sharing of classic travel behaviors. There certainly is nothing fundamentally "new" about sharing pictures, clipping out articles and notes and putting them in a folder, or asking your friends for their ideas on where to go on vacation; indeed these are as old as time.

Marketing Tip

Four Common Myths About Press Releases
by Kevin Nunley
www.drnunley.com (888) 429-6203

Just about every new business starts off by sending a press release to media.  That's a great idea.  But don't stop there. It takes more PR on a consistent basis to bring in the BIG media coverage for your business, new product, service or idea.

First, let's dispel a few common myths about press releases:

Myth -- "Newspapers and other media WILL use my press release exactly the way I wrote it."  Wrong.  Because you aren't paying to have media print your release, they can use it or lose it as they see fit.  Often, reporters will take your information and rewrite it or work it into another story.

Myth -- "Your press release should be like a sales letter."
Actually, your press release should read more like a news or feature story in a newspaper.  Your release shouldn't read like an ad or sales letter on a web page.  If it does, editors will pass over your release.

Myth -- "Every word of my release has to be perfect, because editors will be reading it carefully."  Absolutely not.  Editors decide to read a release based on the headline. Then they quickly skim the top of the release to see if it's information they can use.

Myth -- "If you don't get sales right away, your press release is a failure."  It can take weeks or even months before media use your information. Look at a series of press releases as a way to build media awareness of you and your business.  Let editors know you are a consistently good source of quality information about your industry.  Reporters and writers will be more likely to contact you when they need your kind of information.

The bottom line: Start sending out press releases now and keep it up every month.  Response will start slowly, and then build.  Free media publicity is far more powerful than paid advertising, but it takes time and work to achieve.

Email Tip

How to Delete an Address from the Outlook Auto-Complete List
by Heinz Tschabitscher
www.email.about.com

Outlook remembers every address you have typed in a To:, Cc: or Bcc: field. This is good: when you start keying in a name or address, Outlook will automatically suggest the contact in its entirety.

Unfortunately, Outlook remembers the mistyped and old as well as the correct and current — and suggests it indiscriminately. Fortunately, getting rid of entries you no longer want to appear in the auto-complete list is easy.

Delete an Address from the Outlook Auto-Complete List

To remove a name or email address from Outlook's auto-complete list:

  • Create a new email message in Outlook.
  • Start typing the name or address you want to remove.
  • Use the down arrow key to highlight the desired (undesired) entry.
  • Press Delete.
